Fall Foliage Report: September 18-24

I LOVE NY starts the “New York Fall Foliage Report (opens in a new tab) ” on September 11 and will continue until the end of the foliage season, around the first or second week in November. Montgomery County has started its own annual report this year as well.

Predominating colors: Mostly green with small hints of yellow and reds (sumac)

Rating: Just beginning

The leaves are still mostly green but more color is starting to show through – hints of yellow and red are currently the main colors.

This Saturday, September 21, the Town of Minden will hold its 5^thannual History Fair (opens in a new tab) in Haslett Park, downtown Fort Plain. There will be historical displays, demonstrations and exhibits by local residents, historians, and collectors. Amongst the fun are an Old Tyme Movie Theatre, Old Farmer’s Market, scavenger hunt, and new this year will be the Chocolate Jumbles Baking Contest. A historical walking tour of the village will take place at 1pm. Admission is free.

The Ames Museum (opens in a new tab) is also hosting their End of Summer Festival on Saturday. Enjoy the fall colors, tour the museum, talk with and shop through the assorted vendors, 5K run/walk beginning at 9am.

Predominating colors: Mostly green with small hints of yellow

Rating: Just beginning

The leaves are just beginning to change in Montgomery County. While green is still predominant, there are touches of yellow.

This weekend the Landis Arboretum (opens in a new tab) is hosting the Full Moon Music Series (opens in a new tab) with the Red Haired Strangers. “Find the magic of the moon” with live music at the Meeting House. This is a rare full moon on Friday the thirteenth – enjoy the crisp air and spectacular views!

On Saturday, the first annual Canajoharie Street Fair (opens in a new tab) will take place in Downtown Canajoharie. The event will feature live music, vendor booths, food trucks, a parade at 1:30pm, car show, and the King of the Wing chicken wing contest, ending with fireworks.

While in Canajoharie, visit the Arkell Museum’s (opens in a new tab) Regional Art Galleries art show featuring the work of Linda Armstrong (Juror’s Choice award), Jack Graber, and Bruce Muirhead (Best in Show) through October 16. 3 Solo Shows: Armstrong, Graber, and Muirhead (opens in a new tab) exhibit the work of three artists whose work was selected for The Art of New York: Annual Juried Art Show in 2018.

Predominating colors: Still green with mostly yellow with hints of orange and red

Rating: Nearing Peak

While there is still green in many places, the leaves are changing fast and the wind has blown several off the trees. This weekend and over the next would be ideal to still see some color.

This weekend is packed with more events!

Lock 13 10_17_18 — Mohawk Valley Welcome Center at Lock E-13

The Historic Amsterdam League (opens in a new tab) host the annual “Ghosts of the Past Tour”. Do you have the courage to walk the historic Green Hill Cemetery in the dark? There is only one way to find out!

The 1^st Annual Palatine Bridge 19^th C. Themed Old- Fashioned County Fair (opens in a new tab) is this weekend. The event boasts craft and food vendors, children’s activities including pony rides, music and more!

George Steele will be on hand at Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site and Landis Arboretum (opens in a new tab) for an “Owl Prowl” this weekend. During this hootin’ good family program listen for, look for, and should you be so lucky, see owls. Learn about the owls of the region and explore these nocturnal birds of prey.

The circa 1729 Van Alstyne Homestead & Museum (opens in a new tab) hosts their 7^th Annual Soup Tasting, Craft Fair, and Fall Harvest Festival on Saturday. There will be delicious soups donated by local chefs, and eateries, fall seasoned crafts available by vendors from far and wide, and delicious harvest specialties grown by local producers. As well as local and international artists on hand with their beautiful works on display and live music performed.

Fall Foliage Report: October 10-16

Predominating colors: Still green with more red, orange, yellow coming out

Rating: Midpoint

This week has more color coming through with yellows and oranges and some reads. It would be a great time to take a ride and see the fall foliage. There are also many events happening on Saturday throughout the county!

The Village of Ames Museum (opens in a new tab) will be open 9am to 3pm.

Celebrate the fall harvest and take advantage of your last chance of the season to visit Old Fort Johnson (opens in a new tab) and the 1918 exhibit. This open house features outdoor baking, fresh apple cider pressing and other family activities. Free admission all day, donations are always welcome. The event is 10am-4pm.

From 11am-4pm, the Glen Conservancy (opens in a new tab) and the 77^th NY Regimental Balladeers will host Harvest Fest (opens in a new tab) in the hamlet of Glen. Events will take place in and around Conservancy Hall and will include activities at the Glen Cottage Farms, and at the Rustic Red House at the Glen Country Store at the confluence of Routes 30A and 161. Music, face painting, pumpkin painting, flower arranging, and more.

The Palatine Settlement Society invites the public to the annual “Afternoon at the Tavern (opens in a new tab) .” This event is scheduled for Saturday from 1–4pm, and will be held at the historic 1747 Nellis Tavern in St. Johnsville.

There will be a variety of beer and cider provided by Wolf Hollow and Rogers Cidery. Soup and bread will also be served. Tickets, available in advance, are $15 per person with a limited number of tickets available at the door.

I LOVE NY started the “New York Fall Foliage Repor (opens in a new tab) t” on September 12 and will continue until the end of the foliage season, around the first or second week in November. Montgomery County has started its own annual report this year as well.

Percent of trees predicted to have changed by the coming weekend: 15%

Brilliance: Still dull in some of the areas of the site, but average at Yankee Hill

Predominating colors: Some areas are green with warm colors or red and yellow and some orange

Rating: Beginning

The leaves are slowly changing in Montgomery County this season. Green is still predominant with warm tones of red, yellow, and orange.

This weekend has some great fall events!

The City of Amsterdam hosts the 2^nd Annual OktoberFest Block Party on Bridge Street in Amsterdam. Visit the Southside for fall treats, German music, games, craft vendors, and of course beer! OktoberFest fun starts ate 2pm with live entertainment:

Predominating colors: Mostly green hints of Orange

Rating: beginning stages

The leaves are beginning to change in Montgomery County. While green is still predominant, there are touches orange, yellow and red.

The calendar is full of events including live music, historic celebrations, and agricultural events. The Ames Museum (opens in a new tab) is celebrating the end of summer and the 1747 Nellis Tavern (opens in a new tab) is open for tours through September.

On Saturday, September 29th Fort Klock Historic Restoration’s 18th century Revolutionary war living history event will be happening! Interrupted Harvest 1778 the raids begin, 10:00 AM – 04:00 PM.

Also, the Schoharie River Center in Esperance, will be hosting the Square and Contradance, a lively evening of dancing! Catskills caller, Peter Blue, will call this square and contra dance in the SRC Cultural Center. Live music by Erik House, Kathy Shimberg, and Ira McIntosh.

The 2nd Annual OktoberFest Block Party will be held on Saturday, October 6th on Amsterdam’s Southside! Food, German music, and of course beer! Fall treats and goodies for sale, games all day, food and craft vendors, and more.

On Sunday, September 22 there are a few great events happening.

Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site is teaming up with Down by the River Kayak Rentals to host introductory kayaking lessons for children. These courses are intended for beginner or novice level paddlers ages 14 to 17. Audrey Egelston of Down by the River Kayak Rentals will facilitate the two-hour introductory sessions. Space is limited and pre-registration is required (opens in a new tab) for this free program.

In Canajoharie, Montgomery County Historian/RMO Kelly Yacobucci Farquhar will lead a walking tour of the Village of Canajoharie on Saturday, September 22 at 11 am. The tour will highlight various sites associated with the African Americans who lived in Canajoharie during the 19th century as well as potential abolitionist activity. Brochures will identify the sites on a map of the Village of Canajoharie and the walking tour will include a portion of the sites, not all, but the brochures/maps will be available long after the walking tour. At Old Fort Johnson the Annual Fall Fundraiser will be held from 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM. Featuring a sampler of the county’s best homemade soups, breads and pies. Enjoy amazing regional cooking while supporting the preservation of Old Fort Johnson. Limited seating, advance tickets recommended.$25 adults, $10 children includes unlimited soup samples, bread, pie, beverage and a special limited edition commemorative mug. Held rain or shine under tents in our beautiful gardens.

On Sunday is the annual Sundae on the Farm (opens in a new tab) located at Dykeman & Sons, Fultonville. A specialty of this farm is their rotary parlor and a robotic post-dipper. Learn about these new technologies on the farm while having fun. There will be educational activities, food, different varieties of farm animals, and more.

Indiana Jones and Fort Plank: The Cleaner Side of Archaeology

Join Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site on Tuesday, September 26^th as researcher Ken D. Johnson delivers his presentation, “Indiana Jones and Fort Plank: The Cleaner Side of Archaeology.”

The program takes the audience along with Ken on a search for the fortress in which his ancestors served during the American Revolution. From this fort, one of them was taken prisoner on August 2, 1780, and their father and sister were killed. His program also presents to the audience the first step in locating a site for a possible historical dig.

Johnson has served as the Fort Plank Historian since 1984 and is the author of “The Bloodied Mohawk: The Revolutionary War in the Words of Fort Plank’s Defenders and Other Mohawk Valley Partisans”. He also operates a free web-site that contains biographical and historical data on the Colonial Period in the Mohawk Valley of New York.

This free program will be held in the Enders House adjacent to the Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site Visitor Center on Schoharie Street in Fort Hunter, New York. There will be a brief Friends of Schoharie Crossing meeting prior to the presentation and there will be refreshments available.

Predominating colors: Shades of darkening green with yellow and increasing oranges and reds

Rating: Midpoint

The foliage in Montgomery County has reached midpoint. Peak season should be approaching; some areas are starting to lose leaves but others are still green. There are still many autumn activities (opens in a new tab) taking place this October. Visit the Taste of the Mohawk Valley Farmers’ Market (opens in a new tab) or the Last Saturday Fall Festival (opens in a new tab) . Or take a historic self-guided walking tour through the Green Hill Cemetery (opens in a new tab)
