at Schoharie Crossing

Award winning storyteller Jennifer Munro will be performing at Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site on Sunday, August 5th at 6:00 pm as part of the annual Not Just for Kids Storytelling series. Her performance entitled “Cast of Characters: Ordinary Stories about Extraordinary Moments” will take place outdoors near the Schoharie Crossing Visitor Center. The show will move indoors in case of rain. Guests are invited to linger, chat, and enjoy refreshments after the show. The event is free.

Jennifer Munro is a featured teller at this year’s National Storytelling Festival in Jonesboro, Tennessee. Her extensive repertoire of stories explore the triumphs and foibles of the human condition. She has a wicked sense of humor, and her original stories are witty, poignant and warm hearted.

The Not Just for Kids Storytelling series continues throughout August and into September. The following artists will be part of the series: Andy Offutt Irwin, Aug. 12, Claire Nolan Aug. 19, Anne Shimojima, Aug. 26 and Nancy Marie Payne, Sept. 9.

Saratoga Arts made this program possible with a Community Arts Grant funded by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. The program is also supported by Stewart’s Shops, Mary Jane’s Market, L’Ultimo, the Garden Bug, Karen’s Produce and the Friends of Schoharie Crossing.

Wildlife Wednesday Edible Plant Program with Anita Sanchez At Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site

Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site will host environmental educator and author Anita Sanchez on July 25^th at 6:30pm for the third program in our 2018 Wildlife Wednesday series. Sanchez will discuss wild edible plants and there will also be some sampling of those found on the grounds of the historic site. We will also try some wild teas as well. The program will meet outside the Visitor Center at 129 Schoharie Street, Fort Hunter.

Sanchez worked as an environmental educator for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation at education centers across the state. She now is a free-lance educator, providing programs for schools, libraries, museums, botanical gardens, and arboreta. Also, she is a successful author and champion of unloved plants, and has written, “The Teeth of the Lion: The Story of the Beloved and Despised Dandelion” and most recently, “Leaflets Three, Let it Be! The Story of Poison Ivy”.

This is a free event open to the public. Donations to the Friends of Schoharie Crossing are always appreciated. Wildlife Wednesdays continue August 8^th at 5:30pm and the 22nd at 6:30pm. Upcoming nature programs include an Early Morning Bird Walk with George Steel beginning 6:30am on August 12^th at Yankee Hill Lock on Queen Anne Road, and Anita Sanchez presenting on “The Teeth of the Lion: The Story of the Beloved and Despised Dandelion” occurring on Tuesday, August 28^th at 6:30pm in the Enders House. ECOS: The Environmental Clearinghouse of Schenectady will also be conducting a paddle event from Schoharie Crossing on August 11^th to highlight the environmental aspects of the Schoharie Creek and Mohawk River.

Wildlife Wednesday Bird Walk with George Steele

Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site will host environmental educator George Steele on June 27^theat 6:30pm for the first in the 2018 Wildlife Wednesday program series. Steele will lead a walk that explores different areas of the historic site around the Visitor Center while watching and listening for various bird species. The walk will take place along the banks of Schoharie Creek and on historic site trails, which were formerly the towpath for the Erie Canal. The program will meet outside the Visitor Center at 129 Schoharie Street, Fort Hunter. There is no charge, but donations are always appreciated. (opens in a new tab)

Birders know that the region is terrific for the varied species that can be found, and at Schoharie Crossing there is a tremendous birding habitat complete with waterways, wetlands, reforested spaces and more. The site is known for appearances by species such as the Great Blue Heron, Osprey, Orioles, Pileated Woodpeckers, Egrets, Belted Kingfisher, Bald Eagles, Canada Geese, and many more.

George Steele is a lifelong educator. His unique blend of expertise and enthusiasm has turned thousands of children into science-lovers. For over 20 years he has been an independent education consultant working with schools, libraries, nature centers, and museums thought the Northeast, including the NYS Art Teachers Association, the NYS Outdoor Education Association, the Gifted and Talented Enrichment Program at Lafayette College and Lehigh University.

He is the former director of the NYSDEC Environmental Education Camp Program, recipient of the Conservation Educator Award of the NYS Conservation Council, the NYS Outdoor Education Association’s Gold Award for Lifetime Achievement and Outdoor Educator of the Year Award.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Forest Biology from SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry, and has done graduate work at the Antioch/New England Graduate School in Keene, NH.

The Wildlife Wednesday series will occur every two weeks from the end of June until September. Alternating time slots of 6:30pm and 5:00pm and will feature engaging environmental education with George Steele, Anita Sanchez and Student Conservation Association interns from the Saratoga Spa State Park.

Kids to Parks Day at Schoharie Crossing

Kids to Parks Day at Schoharie Crossing

Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site will be participating in the national program called Kids to Parks Day on Saturday, May 19. Bring the kids or grandkids out to the park for a nature program and exploration of the natural wonders of this rich historic site! We will traverse the trail, watching for birds and spotting wildflowers along the way!

The leisurely nature walk starts next to the Visitor Center at 11am and it will take about 90 minutes with interpretive staff. The site is excited to once again be part of National Park Trust’s Kids to Parks Day.

After the walk, children will be encouraged to participate in a seed planting craft project and decorate the sidewalks with chalk. This event is free and perfect for families.

Bring along a picnic lunch to enjoy at the site and create new memories that will last a lifetime.

Hundreds of thousands of children nationwide will take part in a ‘national day of play’ on Saturday, May 19, to commemorate National Park Trust’s seventh annual Kids to Parks Day. National Park Trust, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is dedicated to preserving parks today and creating park stewards for tomorrow. Since 1983, NPT has completed more than 100 land projects benefiting 40 national parks and other public lands in 33 states and Washington, D.C.

If Rivers Could Speak

On October 24, 2017 Alden (Joe) Doolittle will present an evening of storytelling at Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site. His program entitled “If Rivers Could Speak, The Stories They’d Tell,” offers stories of the Mohawk Valley, its people and places. From the Iroquois and early European settlers to the Revolution and the Erie Canal, Joe will tell tales of how the valley affected the history and development of our nation. The event is free. The program, hosted by the Friends of Schoharie Crossing, starts at 6:30. Refreshments are served after the performance. All are welcome.

Joe Doolittle has applied his humorous good-natured style with audiences throughout the state. He has developed many historically based tales about the Hudson and Mohawk Valleys. He is a coproducer of Story Circle at Proctors, a resident company offering a variety of programs at the theater. In 2103, he was honored by the National Storytelling Network with the Oracle Award for Leadership and Service in the Northeast Region. In 2015, the League for the Advancement of New England Storytelling gave him the Brother Blue and Ruth Hill Award for exceptional leadership in Storytelling.

A Musical Journey Along the Erie Canal w/ Cosby & Tom

Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site will host musicians Cosby Gibson and Tom Staudle as they take you on a journey along the historic Erie Canal through music. Gibson and Staudle have developed this terrific program to provide the history of the grand old Erie through the music it inspired. The program begins at 6:30pm on Saturday, September 30^th at the Schoharie Crossing Visitor Center on Schoharie Street in Fort Hunter.

Learn some interesting facts about the canal, sing along to a few tunes you probably already know, and hear some that you may not. This well researched program about the canal era and its music brings alive the soul of what it was like to travel on, work on, and live alongside the artificial waterway during it’s heyday from the 1820s to the early 20^th century. Come enjoy the music and check out some of the amazing historic canal features at Schoharie Crossing.

This event is free and perfect for families.

Mohawk River Moveable Dams

On Tuesday, August 22, The New York State Canal Corporation will be presenting a talk on the Mohawk River Moveable Dams. The talk, which begins at 6:30pm, is sponsored by the Friends of Schoharie Crossing. It will be held at the Enders House, close to the Schoharie Crossing Visitor Center in Fort Hunter, NY. Refreshments will be served following the event. The program is free, and all are welcome.

The presentation will showcase the eight movable dams between Schenectady and Fort Plain which regulate water flow on the Mohawk River for navigation of the Canal as well as water control. Dam gates are lowered into the river to form navigable pools during the summer but are pulled out of the water in the winter to clear the way for ice and debris filled flood waters. This engineering marvel has been a focus of attention since they were built in the early 20^th century. The talk will give some of the history and engineering information about this remarkable innovation to the waterway.

Storyteller Jeannine Laverty to Perform

at Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site

Nationally known storyteller Jeannine Laverty will be performing at Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site on Sunday, July 30 at 6:00pm as the kickoff event of the annual Not Just for Kids Storytelling series. Her performance will take place outdoors in front of the Schoharie Crossing Visitor Center on Schoharie Street in Fort Hunter. The show will move indoors in case of rain. Guests are invited to linger, chat, and enjoy refreshments after the show. The event is free.

Jeannine Laverty is a gifted storyteller, who has been performing since 1979. Her wide range of stories spans the world from the Adirondacks to Asia giving her audience a deeply satisfying understanding of the world through the eyes of another. She also uses her storytelling talent to teach other tellers, and she has been the recipient of many awards including a leadership award from the National Storytelling Network.

The Not Just for Kids Storytelling series continues throughout August and into September. The following artists will be part of the series: Elizabeth Ellis, Aug. 6, Peter Cook, Aug. 13, Michael Reno Harrell, Aug. 20, Joe Bruchac, Aug. 27 and Becky Holder, Sept. 10.

Views and Vistas Art Opening

At Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site

The Friends of Schoharie Crossing are hosting a juried art exhibition entitled Views and Vistas: The Natural and Built Environment of Schoharie Crossing. The opening will take place on July 8 at the Schoharie Crossing Visitor Center from 4-7pm. Refreshments will be served, and singer song writer, Kate Blain will perform for the event.

Schoharie Crossing provides magnificent views of nature as well as human engineering. Historic Erie Canal structures are juxtaposed among the natural world of plants and animals along the Schoharie Creek and Mohawk River. The tranquil waterways, wetlands, and Erie Canal structures of Schoharie Crossing are wonderfully presented in the art work on display in the Schoharie Crossing Visitor Center.

The show was juried by 3 notable artists: Natalie Bobinka, Visual Arts Resource Teacher Schenectady High School, International Baccalaureate Visual Arts Instructor, Curator Butzel Gallery/Schenectady, NY, Joel Chapin, Professor of Fine Arts, director of the Perrella Gallery, and J. Bruce Schwabach, Emeritus Associate Professor of Art, Herkimer College of SUNY.

Sponsors of the opening include: Bourbon Street Wine and Liquor Warehouse, Hummingbird Hills Winery, The Wine Barrel, MaryJane’s Market, 518 Grille, Olde Brick House, Black Bear Wine and Spirits and Italian Oven.

The art opening will close out the first day of Canal Days, an annual community festival celebrating the history of the Erie Canal. Events earlier in the day include performances by blue grass band, Three Quarter North, wagon rides, J.D. Winslow Equestrian Entertainment,

I LOVE NY started the “New York Fall Foliage Report (opens in a new tab) ” on September 14 and continue until the end of the foliage season, around the first or second week in November. Montgomery County has started its own annual report this year as well.
