Join us as we host the amazing Cosby Gibson and Tom Staudle for this history song program! Cosby & Tom will perform canal songs and share the history of the Erie Canal with you inside the Enders House at Schoharie Crossing. The Erie Canal was the most important advancement in the 1800’s for the transportation of goods in New York state. Running from Buffalo to Albany and connected to the Hudson River, it allowed New York City to become the largest trade port in the nation. And, it was born from an idea of a merchant in debtor’s prison, because they couldn’t receive their goods fast enough to pay bills! For adults and older children, about 40 minutes. This program is free and open to the public. Donations are graciously accepted to help support the Friends of Schoharie Crossing, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of the Erie Canal at Schoharie Crossing.

The City of Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Tourism, Marketing & Recreation Department presents Sunset Festivals Sponsored by Lanzi Family Restaurants beginning on Saturday, June 19th with J. Marco Johnson performing at 6pm in Riverlink Park.
The evening will begin with Jen Marshall and Paul Cirillo finishing their 50 mile run from Mohawk, NY to Riverlink Park in Amsterdam, NY via the Erie Canal Bike Path. The duo is running to raise funds and awareness for child hunger in our community. The run is slated to finish at about 6pm in Riverlink Park. Funds raised from the run will benefit Weekend Backpack Program Fundraiser.
The City then welcomes back live music back to Riverlink Park with J. Marco Johnson performing. As always, enjoy great food and drink specials at Astoria Landing at Riverlink Park Marina. Support a great cause, enjoy great food all while listening to some great music on our beautiful waterfront.
I LOVE NY started the “New York Fall Foliage Report (opens in a new tab) ” on September 11 and will continue until the end of the foliage season, around the first or second week in November. Montgomery County has started its own annual report this year as well.

The Landis Arboretum (opens in a new tab) is hosting Star Parties (opens in a new tab) on Saturday and Sunday. View the stars and planets in Landis’ dark skies with members of the Albany Area Amateur Astronomers. A variety of telescopes will be set up for viewing the heavens, revealing nebulae, star clusters, galaxies, double stars, planets, and other celestial objects. Guests of all ages are always welcome. Feel free to bring your own telescope. Registration is recommended. Star Parties are cancelled if the skies are mostly cloudy. If in doubt, call Alan French at (518)374-8460. Saturday evening, the Glen Conservancy Hall (opens in a new tab) features Guy Davis, Ambassador of the Blues (opens in a new tab) . Guy Davis has spent his musical life carrying his message of the blues around the world, from the Equator to the Arctic Circle his work as an actor, author, and music teacher earmark him as a renaissance man of the blues. Join the fun in the hamlet of Glen for a very special performance by Guy as he shares his favorite songs and stories and brings the Blues to downtown Glen.

As temperatures drop, more bright colors are emerging. The upper edges of the Mohawk Valley are nearer peak so a drive along the Mohawk River provides an explosion of fine fall foliage. Fingers crossed the rain doesn’t put a damper on the leaf peeping. Leaves that changed earlier in the season have already fallen with the help of wind and rain.
This Friday and Saturday the Historic League of Amsterdam presents Ghosts of the Past: A Haunted History Tour of Green Hill Cemetery (opens in a new tab) . Meet past notable Amsterdam residents and learn their stories while experiencing beautiful and historic Green Hill Cemetery. All tours begin and end at Amsterdam City Hall. Free refreshments provided. Tour times for both Friday and Saturday nights are 6:00, 6:30, 7:00, 7:30, 8:00 and 8:30pm. Tickets are available at the Book Hound and Damiano’s Flowers.
Saturday the VanAlstyne Homestead & Museum (opens in a new tab) is holding the 8th Annual Soup Tasting & Craft Fair (opens in a new tab) . There will be delicious soups donated by local chefs, and eateries, fall seasoned crafts available by vendors from far and wide, and delicious harvest specialties grown by local producers. There will also be local and international artists on hand with their beautiful works on display. Live music will be performed in the century old ballroom, museum tours will be available, as well as a 50/50 raffle.
The Arkell Museum (opens in a new tab) presents Adirondack Lumber Camp Songs (opens in a new tab) on Sunday afternoon. Join in for an afternoon of rousing lumberjack songs. Enjoy the music and learn about this tough, rough, and crucial work. This program also includes informative narratives about Adirondack Mountain logging camps in the 1800s. This program runs about an hour and is most enjoyable for older children and adults. Admission is free. Donations are always welcome and help support future programs.
