Between 1749 and 1776, Fort Johnson and Johnson Hall were home to several dozen enslaved men, women, and children. They came from many places, spoke many languages, and lived and labored side by side in bondage, working in the fields and homes of the Johnson family and those associated with them. Learn about ongoing research that sheds new light on this enslaved community, the realities of their daily lives, and the bonds and forces that united or separated them.
Speaker Ian Mumpton, Interpretive Programs Assistant at Johnson Hall State Historic Site, has worked at historic sites across New York, with a special interest in highlighting the stories of Loyalists, Native Americans, and enslaved people of African ancestry in Mohawk Valley history.

Caroga Lake Music Festival on Tour
Internationally acclaimed Resident Artists from the Caroga Lake Music Festival – Eddie Barbash, Duncan Wickel and the KASA Quartet – come to Old Fort Johnson for a lawn concert celebrating fiddle and folk music with new twists. Saxophonist Eddie Barbash has performed at venues and jazz festivals around the world, collaborating with musicians in many styles: bluegrass, indie rock, grandma’s favorite tunes and classical standards. Known for his chameleon-like qualities on the fiddle, cello, and other stringed instruments, Duncan Wickel has performed at Carnegie Hall, The Lincoln and Kennedy Centers, and venues in over 22 countries (so far.) The KASA Quartet (Andy Liang, Aaron Schwartz, Stephanie Price-Wong and Kyle Price) curate fresh, innovative, genre-defying performances that fuse the classical repertoire with favorites of the jazz, musical theater, folk and pop standards in original arrangements and transcriptions. Expect an evening of memorable performances that span musical genres and styles.
The acclaimed Caroga Lake Music Festival is celebrating 20 years of performances at Sherman’s Park in Fulton County this year, bringing musicians from all over the world for their summer season on site and on tour to nearby communities. Saratoga Arts made this program possible at Old Fort Johnson through the Community Arts Regrant Program, funded by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
Free admission, donations towards ongoing restoration of Old Fort Johnson are always appreciated!

Children must be present in the car to receive a bag and the event is open to children age 12 and under. The event will take place at the Veteran’s Park parking lot, on Locust Avenue.
Due to COVID-19 the City of Amsterdam had to make a few changes to our annual Trick or Treat. This year you will get to enjoy a free family Drive-Thru Trick or Treat on Halloween! Veteran’s Park will be spooktacularly decorated while we hand out fun treats and great prizes! If your business or organization is interested in becoming a Treat Sponsor, your donation will help provide kids in the City of Amsterdam with candy & prizes in their goodie bags. Your business name will be displayed proudly on the City of Amsterdam Tourism, Marketing & Recreation Department social media outlets and a thank you flyer will be placed in the 1,500 goodie bags.
Mayor Mike Cinquanti said the City’s traditional Trick or Treat on the MVGO Bridge, which annually packs the span with thousands of adults and children was not an option this year due to concerns about spiking a COVID-19 outbreak. “We also felt that a large number of parents would be hesitant having their children go door-to-door trick-or-treating and our residents would not be eager to hand out candy this year” explained the Mayor. “So we created this alternative event so that children could dress up in their costumes and get a bag full of treats safely, at one stop.”
For information on how to become a Treat Sponsor please visit the City of Amsterdam Tourism, Marketing & Recreation Department Facebook page or call Michele Pawlik at 518-841-4307.
