SUMMARY:Explore Handwoven Textiles from a Palatine German Collection
DESCRIPTION:Willis Barshied Jr collected the textiles woven by his neighbors in the area of Stone Arabia New York. The collection is from the Palatine German culture dating from the 18th century through the early 19th century. This collection of textiles a unique look at everyday fabrics hand spun and hand woven in a radius of 40 miles. \nJoin Rabbit Goody for a weekend of exploration of these textiles learning how to identify and date towels\, sheets\, coverlets\, and clothing fabric that have been stored in the White House at Kilts Farm\, Stone Arabia\, New York since Skip collected them. This is truly an opportunity to see\, examine\, date\, and catalogue this very special collection. \nIncluded will be the sharing of letters from Hannah Hayden and her family about living and producing textiles in another area of New York State\, Hartwick\, and Springfield in Otsego County. \nHannah’s letters are extremely details and give us specific information about what her family was spinning\, weaving\, eating\, and the trade of her husband as a clothier. The letters reveal economic history of the world as the Hayden’s knew it\, and the interpersonal relationships between families that provided for each other. Rarely do we have such detailed information about everyday life and hand production that at times was a world of scarcity and at others one of richness. Hezekiah and Strong Hayden were early settlers and brought blue dyeing\, fulling and cloth finishing to their area of rural New York. \nThe two-day workshop includes lunch and all tools for dating and identifying\, hand outs\, and copies of excerpts from Hannah. Students are encouraged to bring coverlets and other textiles from their collection for identification.

SUMMARY:Traditional Upholstery Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this two day class students will learn some of the history of early American upholstery as it came to us from France by way of England and was adapted by colonial craftsmen with the materials that they could obtain both locally and from imported sources.  We will discuss the simple tools and materials needed for both simple and complex work\, including linen webbing\, hessian (burlap) coir fiber\, curled horsehair\, cotton wadding\, and calico (muslin).  Students will complete a simple footstool using hand tacking and hand-sewing techniques in the English style as described by David James in his book “Upholstery\, A Complete Course”. \nAll tools and materials including frames will be provided as well as a selection of generic show covers\, and students are also free to bring ¾ to 1 yard of their own fabric if they wish.  No prior experience in upholstery is necessary\, however a willingness to work with heavy threads and large needles is a great starting point.

SUMMARY:Caroga Lake Music Festival on Tour
DESCRIPTION:Internationally acclaimed Resident Artists from the Caroga Lake Music Festival – Eddie Barbash\, Duncan Wickel and the KASA Quartet – come to Old Fort Johnson for a lawn concert celebrating fiddle and folk music with new twists. Saxophonist Eddie Barbash has performed at venues and jazz festivals around the world\, collaborating with musicians in many styles: bluegrass\, indie rock\, grandma’s favorite tunes and classical standards. The KASA Quartet (Andy Liang\, Aaron Schwartz\, Stephanie Price-Wong and Kyle Price) curate fresh\, innovative\, genre-defying performances that fuse the classical repertoire with favorites of the jazz\, musical theater\, folk and pop standards in original arrangements and transcriptions. Expect an evening of memorable performances that span musical genres and styles.\nThe acclaimed Caroga Lake Music Festival is celebrating 20 years of performances at Sherman’s Park in Fulton County this year\, bringing musicians from all over the world for their summer season on site and on tour to nearby communities.
